NFL News: Mike Tomlin Signs Long-Term Extension with the Steelers By Grant Winsauer

NFL

Ari Meirov reported Monday that Mike Tomlin agreed to a 3-year contract extension to continue as the Steelers coach.

This isn’t surprising because Tomlin hasn’t had a losing season in 15 years. According to Sportingnews.com, he has finished at .500 three times: in 2012, 2013, and 2019, and has a winning record in each of his other 12 full seasons.

Tomlin is a great head coach, and it was an excellent idea for the Steelers to extend his contract for another three years since he was approaching the final year of his current contract. The Steelers have a successful history of hiring the correct head coach in Pittsburgh.

In the last 55 years, they have only had three different head coaches. According to the footballdb.com, those three head coaches were Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, and Mike Tomlin. Also, according to footballdb.com, Noll coached 366 games, where he won 209 games and lost 156 with one tie. Bill Cowher coached 261 games, where he won 161 games and lost 99 with one tie. Mike Tomlin has coached in 293 games, winning 181 and losing 110 with two ties. It will be interesting to see how much longer Tomlin continues to coach. He might want to beat Noll's record and could do that during this next contract if he keeps winning.

It will be interesting to see how this team works out with Russell Wilson because I don’t know how much he has left in the tank. Luckily, the Steelers have Justin Fields as the backup, and they both have similar skill sets, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Fields gets to see the field if Wilson struggles throughout the season. Tomlin had high praise for Fields after he traded for him a few months ago.
