NFL News: Zach Wilson Traded to the Broncos
On Monday, Tom Pelissero reported that Zach Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos.
A fresh start was needed for Wilson, but I still believe that the Broncos will take a quarterback with their 12th overall pick Thursday. I never thought Wilson would be more than a career backup in the NFL.
Wilson was never truly impressive in college until his junior year. According to sportsreference.com, he threw for 3692 yards with 33 touchdowns and three interceptions. He only moved up on teams’ draft boards because of one throw during his pro day. People need to remember that pro day are scripted, and there is no pressure on anyone’s face during a pro day, so it is just the quarterback and the receiver playing catch.
I don’t believe that even Sean Payton can save Wilson’s career. They traded for him because they needed a backup quarterback. Wilson will be a backup quarterback for the rest of his career and should never have been a starting quarterback in the first place.
When the Jets drafted Wilson with the No. 2 overall pick back in 2021, there were better QBs available at that spot, and I believe they regret taking Wilson with that pick when they could have taken Justin Fields.
According to ESPN.com, Wilson’s career as a starting quarterback included 6293 yards, 23 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions.
The only reason I see him coming into a game that counts towards the Broncos’ record next season is if the quarterback they draft, whoever it ends up being, is struggling and gets benched in the middle of the game or if the quarterback gets injured. Wilson gets another shot to prove himself (although I would be surprised if he proves anything).
