The Athletic has layoffs thanks to greed of The New York Times by Nick Morgasen

The media business has taken a massive hit since the pandemic started in 2020, leading to many jobs being eliminated, or “cutting corners” due to greedy corporations putting the money back in their pockets.

I remember when the New York Times purchased The Athletic because it was starting to fail due to the site being behind a paywall. As we have learned over the last couple of years, no one wants to pay for content behind a paywall. When I can go to free websites like ESPN, Fox Sports, CBS Sports, Sports Illustrated and many more, why would I need The Athletic? Originally, I got the subscription to The Athletic from my parents as a gift for the holidays so I could read some of my favorite writers/reporters and know some of those writers are losing their jobs because of corporate greed.

In my last blog, I talked about the massive number of layoffs from the radio business as all those corporations were cutting corners as well. Those companies were expecting some people to do four to five jobs when they normally do one or two. I’m frustrated with the media business because they don’t care about the hard-working people who put in long hours to do the job to perfection. Journalists are not given the proper credit they deserve, and they are underpaid and The Athletic (NY Times) is another example of why the media is heading in the wrong direction.

Maybe if The Athletic and other companies would stop paying high salaries to the C-Level jobs, and gave some of that money to the hard-working writers, you wouldn’t have to lay them off.

The media business needs to stop saying they are doing local coverage for sports teams and events, because we all know eventually it will turn into greedy millionaires not willing to spend the money to handle the coverage correctly.
