UFC 300 Main Event Announced Following Action Packed UFC 298 Card By Patrick Danna

After much anticipation, UFC 300 finally has a main event we can all look forward to. After the wild UFC 298 card, Dana White took to social media to announce that Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill would headline the historic event. This was unexpected for many fans as it seemed like Pereira would be defending his title at UFC 301, which was recently confirmed to be taking place in his home country of Brazil.

It seems as if the UFC may have gotten a bit desperate due to the lack of potential headliners for UFC 300 and just pushed this fight up from UFC 301. Other options considered for the main event were Leon Edwards vs. Belal Muhammad and Dricus du Plessis vs. Israel Adesanya.

Jamahal Hill has been out of action since a ruptured Achilles he suffered back in July put him on the sidelines for the time being. Hill was the champion when he suffered the injury, leading to him vacating the title which allowed Alex Pereira the opportunity to take the belt. Hill won the title after a dominant performance last January over then-champion Glover Teixeira, who had Alex Pereira in his corner that night.

Alex Pereira won that vacant belt in November after a controversial, yet monumental TKO win against Jiri Prochazka. The win solidified Pereira’s status in history as he became one of just nine fighters in UFC history to win titles in two different weight classes. Pereira also accomplished this feat in record time, needing just seven fights in the promotion to attain both titles. While he did lose his middleweight championship in a rematch with Israel Adesanya, he wasted no time going up to his natural weight class and taking that title. This will be the first defense of his newly acquired light heavyweight championship and give the Brazilian yet another chance to avenge his coach and best friend, Glover Teixeira.
