Bar Under Flames For Mocking Late Matthew Perry By: Breana Blackman

Matthew Perry’s sudden death shocked many friends co-stars and practically the entire internet last week Saturday. But the moves of one Aussie pub put the internet in uproar as well. Many New Yorkers honored Matthew Perry’s passing by laying flowers and candles at a famous ‘Friends’ filming location. Plenty of folks shot over to Instagram, X, and Facebook to pay respects to the late actor. The South Australian pub The Unley had a different idea.

The Unley posted to its social media pages that its new cocktail of the month would be themed after Matthew Perry titling the drink “The Chandler Bing”. For a whopping 18 dollars, the Unley wanted you to drown your sorrows in all what seemed like a quick cash grab. Unley claimed it was a tribute to our sarcastic king which has been removed from Instagram. The graphic  shared on Instagram titles the drink like an episode stating “The one where we lost a friend” 

Matthew Perry struggled with alcoholism and addiction so this promotion angered many friends. One user left the comment “This feels so wrong considering he battled alcoholism” Another user asked “You knew he was an alcoholic right” Fans were not having it and rightfully so! Just this past December I touched base on Draft King 9/11 parlay stunt. It seems like turning tragedy into a dollar is becoming all too common. I’m not sure if this was the right path to go down. As I’ve been surfing the web I have encountered nothing but tributes and people remembering Matthew for the joy that he brought them. This just seems all too low.. And I don’t like it.

To make matters worse some say Matthew might have wanted to be remembered this way. One user said “Anyone who’s seen his interviews and read his book would know that Friends was not what he wanted to be remembered for” Due to backlash Unley removed the drink from the menu and apologized for its tone deaf campaign. There’s a time and place for everything and this just wasn’t the place or time.
