Brian Cashman Cashing In? By: Brody Sorbera
The start of the offseason posed a lot of questions, the two most pressing were the fate of Shohei Ohtani and Juan Soto, and as of now, we know the fate of one of those star hitters. The New York Yankees in a massive trade with the San Diego Padres traded multiple prospects and bullpen arms for one of the holy grails of the offseason. Juan Soto will dawn the pinstripes next season and will provide much-needed help to the hitting core which was so underwhelming it placed 25th out of 30 teams in the entire league. Not only that blockbuster but a few days earlier the Yankees also traded three right-handed bullpen arms to their hated rival in the Red Sox to acquire outfielder Alex Verdugo, it’s not often the Yanks even speak to Boston but this could be a huge payoff as not only are they bolstering that horrendous hitting core but also cleaning house in the bullpen to make space for better arms.
This has been very out of character for the Yankees as they have recently garnered a reputation for being a cheap organization willing to bet everything on Aaron Judge having another career year. That completely blew up in their face last year with an injury that derailed his and the Yankees’ season. Now it seems that the Yankees front office has finally learned that you can’t rely on Aaron Judge and Gerrit Cole, they are going full throttle this offseason and it only seems to be the beginning. It seems that last season scared the crap out of the Yankees, especially Aaron Boone and Brian Cashman as this is their Hail Mary to save their jobs and now the focus will go to overhauling the bullpen.
