NFL News: Justin Jefferson Agrees to Massive Extension with Minnesota By Grant Winsauer
Adam Schefter reported Monday that Justin Jefferson agreed to a massive extension with the Vikings.
The deal is for four years and is worth $140 million, with $110 million guaranteed. This deal made Jefferson the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL and the highest-paid non-paid quarterback in the NFL.
Not only does Jefferson get his money, but rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy also gets a reliable No. 1 wideout for the next four years. He will also have a great WR2 with Jordon Addison and a reliable tight end in T.J. Hockenson.
When Jefferson asked for a new contract, it was a matter of when they would get the deal done because Jefferson is just that dude. If you get him the ball, Minnesota should be happy it locked him up for the next four years because, depending on his season stats, it is possible that if Jefferson reached free agency next year, he could have gotten more money.
According to ESPN.com, Jefferson has played in 60 career games and has 392 receptions on 576 targets for 5,899 yards and 30 touchdowns. The biggest surprise with his stats is that he only played in 10 games last year and still racked up 1,074 yards and five touchdowns.
It is important to note that Jefferson’s quarterbacks were Kirk Cousins and Josh Dobbs last year. Most of his stats came with Cousins, but Josh Dobbs was a serviceable replacement during the late part of last season.
It will be interesting to see how his stats look next season with Sam Darnold and rookie McCarthy as their best quarterback options. Darnold may go into the season as the starter, but by the middle of the season, if the Vikings have a bad record, they will likely shift to McCarthy to see if he can help them win some games later.
